Leading Women in Sustainability

The Women's Foundation was delighted to present the 12th panel in our Leading Women Speaker Series: a panel of impressive women leaders in sustainability. We are very grateful to Bloomberg for their support for the Series and to Kering for sponsoring today's panel. Thank you also to the Women’s Exchange at HKEx for lending us their auditorium and their invaluable help in shaping the discussion.

Carlo Imo, Head of Kering Asia Pacific, opened the event with a presentation on the importance of sustainability to Kering.

Carlo Imo quoting François-Henri Pinault: "Sustainability is a business imperative and a leadership opportunity". Kering tracks 62 environmental indicators across its entire operations & its supply chain and is open-sourced about its sustainability work because it believes this is the right thing to do.

Christine Loh, Under Secretary of the Environment, pointing out there aren't enough people in financial services in HK who understand ESG. The opportunity for Hong Kong as a financial centre is huge, especially given that China needs to raise trillions to build the infrastructure to be ESG compliant.

Our impressive panellists agreed that companies that care about ESG tend to be better run: they have better risk management and greater efficiency. Ellie Pang/HKEx observed that many HK issuers were uninterested in ESG but 46% are now doing ESG reporting. The HKEx has been working hard to build greater awareness among listed issuers. Interestingly, more than 80% of H share issuers are doing ESG reporting vs less than 40% of local companies.
