We hope you had a rejuvenating break over the holiday season.
2024 had its share of both setbacks and progress for gender equality worldwide. In positive news, we saw the adoption of legal reforms that strengthen the protection of women and girls, including the prohibition of child marriage in Colombia and Sierra Leone, and we witnessed Mexico and Namibia electing their first female presidents.
Despite these bright spots, globally we are still 134 years away from gender parity and 137 years away from lifting women and girls out of poverty, and the growing gender backlash and in many parts of the world may jeopardise any fragile progress we have made.
As we enter 2025, we asked colleagues to share what gives them hope about progressing gender equality in the coming year. We believe their answers will inspire you to share their optimism and to approach 2025 with a firm belief in the possibility of an inclusive, equal Hong Kong for all.
One colleague pointed to changing attitudes in the home:
"Although Hong Kong is an international city, many women still face gender inequality — particularly those in families with traditional mindsets. What gives me hope for 2025 is the increasing acknowledgement and recognition of women's efforts to their families and society at large." - Clara Sit, Assistant Manager, Operations
Another colleague particularly noted men’s increasing engagement in gender equality efforts, particularly in the home, and the positive impact this has:
“My female friends and I are in our early twenties and are currently focused on our careers. But there’s a sense that if / when we do choose to have a family it won’t be at odds with our career ambitions. Women won’t be solely taking up caregiving responsibilities – men will equally share this, and we’ll see all genders striking a balance between family and careers. Having witnessed many examples of TWF Male Allies challenging gender stereotypes – most recently, with an Ally taking leave to join his child’s playgroup, I am confident all genders can balance family and career in healthier ways.” - Danica Liu, Officer, Pipeline Initiatives
One colleague notes her hope in the next generation of gender equality advocates and changemakers:
"What gives me hope is the younger generation’s commitment to gender equality. Whether through advocacy, education, or workplace initiatives, they’re creating a culture where everyone has a fair chance to thrive." - Yoni So, Senior Manager, Communications & Marketing
Another colleague is inspired by the vision of what equality looks like:
“Here’s to a new year where gender equality, gender equity, and trans rights aren't just goals, but a vibrant reality - where everyone shines equally bright, and the only glass we break is for celebrations!” - Carla Bugo, Senior Officer, Community Programmes
Our CEO, Fiona Nott, is energised by our collective potential to make change as a community:
“We read about global uncertainties or backlash but actually there is growing recognition that gender equality benefits everyone. What gives me hope for 2025 is the belief that change is possible and the results that can be achieved when we come together as a community for change.”
This year, with our incredible community of participants, alumni, partners, donors, supporters and other stakeholders, TWF will continue to challenge the status quo and catalyse change for gender equality. We are confident that together we can collectively make material impact to improve the lives of women and girls in Hong Kong.
