As commander of the HMAS Anzac, the lead ship of the Royal Australian Navy’s Anzac class frigates, Belinda Wood understands that it is capability and teamwork, not gender, that is the foundation to success.

COMMANDER WOOD WILL SPEAK ON:

  • her career journey climbing the Australian Naval ranks
  • the challenges and tips for working in a male dominated industry
  • building a cohesive team and maintaining staff morale on deployments

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Commander Wood joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1992. During her training at the Australian Defence Academy Midshipman, Wood served briefly in HMA Ships Jervis Bay and Tobruk. Following graduation from the Australian Defence Force Academy in 1994 she joined HMAS Watson to commence seaman officer training and during this time she served in HMA Ships Swan and Kanimbla and completed an exchange with the US Navy on board USS Germantown.

As a Lieutenant, she completed a Staff Officer job within Navy Headquarters, Canberra, before returning to sea in HMAS Adelaide in 1999. In Adelaide, Lieutenant Wood executed duties of Officer of the Watch and Assistant Principal Warfare Officer and participated in the 1999 INTERFET (International Force East Timor) operation.

Lieutenant Wood completed the Principal Warfare Officer course in 2002; specialising in Anti-Submarine Warfare, and joined HMAS Anzac for Operation SLIPPER duties in the Arabian Gulf. This posting provided an opportunity to participate in the International Coalition Against Terrorism (ICAT) and the conflict against Iraq (Operation FALCONER - Iraq War 2003); culminating in Naval Gunfire in support of the Royal Marines in Iraq.

Lieutenant Commander Wood graduated from the Australian Command and Staff Course in 2010. Commander Wood was promoted in 2011 and commenced two year tenure as Staff Officer to the Chief of Navy (2011-2013). On completion of Major Fleet Unit CO Designate course in 2014, Commander Wood assumed the role of Project Manager SEA 5000 (Future Frigate) within Capability Development Group.

Commander Belinda Wood assumed command HMAS Anzac on 10 December 2014.
