Women and Girls in Hong Kong: Current Situations and Future Challenges

Conducted in partnership with the Gender Research Centre at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, this anthology comprises of twenty scholars from Hong Kong's higher education institutes that provide a thorough review on eleven of the most pressing issues concerning women and girls in Hong Kong and propose recommendations on policies to reduce gender inequalities.

Findings include:

  • Intimate partner violence rose 475 per cent between 1998 and 2008.
  • Drug use among Hong Kong girls has increased
  • Objectification and hypersexualisation of women in media have increased in proliferation
  • While women still bear the majority of child care, the Hong Kong government has not yet provided explicit family-friendly policies to support dual-income families.
  • More changes are needed to nurture advancements in gender equality, and benchmarks may be needed as a standard against which organisations and the government can assess themselves
